Living in the Now

Yesterday was August 1st.  I was assessing things.  My oldest child will be 5 years old this month.  My second child is 3 years, 8 months old.  I have been at home with my children since the day Drew as born.  Yesterday was August 1st, and I found myself complaining to my mom and my sister about “too much togetherness”.  I was complaining that preschool doesn’t start for 5 more long weeks and that we all needed a break from “too much togetherness”.  My kids are fighting because of “too much togetherness”.

Then, last night, I was snuggling in bed with Drew reading the final chapter of Little House in the Big Woods, and the final paragraphs in the story spoke to me.

Little House in the Big Woods Book and Charm (Charming Classics)

In the last pages of the story, it has turned cold again in the Big Woods.  Laura is laying in bed listening to her father play the fiddle and sing about the days of long ago.

“She thought to herself, “This is now.”
“She was glad that the cozy house, and Pa and Ma and the fire-light and the music, were now.  They could not be forgotten, she thought because now is now.  It can never be a long time ago.”

These words snapped me back to reality.

Why am I wishing away the days?  Why am I letting the bickering get to me?  Why do I care so much about clean floors and a messy toy room?

I am choosing to “live in the now”.  I am choosing to hear every word, listen to every sound, and appreciate the “non-perfectness” that is our everyday lives.  I am blessed with two children who make me proud every day.  It is time I stop complaining about “too much togetherness” and appreciate that I get to spend so much time with my kids.  One day, I will look back and feel grateful that I had “all that togetherness”.  After all, it is the simple things in life, right?  A cozy house, happy kids, love, and “togetherness”.

Also included in choosing to “live in the now”, I am going to savor every last drop of rain we have been getting for the last several hours.  We experienced a drought living in San Antonio, and we find ourselves having one in KC too.  I will never again take the rain for granted.  Let it pour!

On a quick side note, I am absolutely loving reading chapter books aloud to Drew (Kate doesn’t have quite the lengthy attention span yet). Little House in the Big Woods was so fun to hear again through adult ears. I know Drew enjoyed it because last night when we finished he asked me to reread a part from a few chapters ago. A friend of mine gave me the series to borrow, and we are excited to get started on Little House on the Prairie. What chapter books are you reading to your kids? I would love some recommendations!

Thanks for letting me get a little serious today, and as always, thanks for stopping by…

  1. Beautiful story! My boys are 13 months apart and I can relate! Now that they're 15 & 16, it's kinda fun! I started following your blog a few weeks ago, but had no idea you were in KC. I'm in Lee's Summit! Wasn't that rain glorious?

    1. Studio1404- Love that you are a local reader! Also glad to know you survived close in age children!! :) Thanks for reading!

  2. I just read The Chocolate Touch to my 5 year old this summer. He really loved it and retained almost every detail of the story. I'm contemplating James and the Giant Peach next.
